Coaching Tip - June 2020

    Hit up through the ball

When playing a social game or a tennis match many of the points decided are as a result of hitting the ball into the net.
Players should learn to avoid the net by hitting up through the ball using the air space 2 to 3 metres above the net.

    Tactical Advantages gained as result

The clearance (2-3 metres) for your shots (strokes) over the net will
    • reduce the number of balls into the net or errors
    • help to improve your consistency
    • keep your strokes deep into the back of the other end of the court near your opponent’s baseline.
    • force your opponent to be on the defensive
    • allow you to go on the offensive so that you can hit an approach shot or a winning shot from any short ball received
    • allow you to build your confidence so that you can play your game and increase your winning chances
    • put the pressure on your opponent by forcing them to continue to play the next shot
    • force your opponent into making errors as a result of perceived pressure exerted by you

Develop the skill of Hitting Up through the ball during your coaching and training sessions so that this skill becomes a part of your game during matches and/or tournaments.

I hope that you are able to use this skill to your advantage so that you can enjoy your matches and play to your ability so that you can get the results that you deserve.
